Who the f**k cares?

It’s #CarersWeek, and our dear friend Lois Sinclair has just published her latest book. Lois cared for her husband, Colin, who was a regular guest at Leuchie, and this book shares her experience as his carer.

Lois reflects on Colin’s life as an anaesthetist and ‘outdoorsy man’, his initial resilience in getting a diagnosis, and how they coped with the changes to their lives that his diagnosis brought.  After a difficult and stressful holiday experience, Lois began looking for alternative holiday options and discovered Leuchie, which she describes as a “big, warm hug”.

No one is truly prepared for the role of caring for a loved one, and Lois wasn’t alone. Whether you’re a carer yourself, regardless of your age, who you care for, or how long you’ve been caring, her journey offers hope, understanding and compassion. Her honest account – sometimes moving, often funny – also provides valuable insight for people working in health and social care, helping them better understand the challenges and isolation many carers face.

Caring for someone you love is a privilege, but it can also be exhausting, challenging and full of unexpected lessons. Even in the hardest times, however, there can still be moments of laughter.
