We regularly welcome students to Leuchie to benefit both their learning and guests in the House. Recently we have had Julie and Adele from Queen Margaret University who are both post-graduates studying on the Pre-Registration MSc in Physiotherapy. They have been doing lots of great things for guests, including holding exercise classes and helping them use our MotoMed exercise bikes.
We spoke with Julia to reflect on some of her highlights and reflections from her placement at Leuchie.
1. What has been the highlight of your placement at Leuchie?
The highlight of my placement at Leuchie has been the opportunity to truly connect with the guests over an extended period of time. Having 11 days with guests allows not only to understand their physiotherapy needs but also to get to know them as people – their personalities, motivations, and what makes them feel valued. Spending meaningful time together created a space to listen deeply, share stories, and sometimes even enjoy moments of laughter. This personal connection made the work both rewarding and emotional.
2. How has your time at Leuchie helped you grow as a physiotherapist?
My time at Leuchie has helped me grow as a physiotherapist by deepening my understanding of holistic, person-centred care. Working with guests whose conditions may be gradually declining has taught me how important it is to adapt physiotherapy approaches to individual abilities and emotional states. I have learned to look beyond the physical aspects of rehabilitation and focus on motivation, comfort, and maintaining dignity.
3. What have you enjoyed about working with guests at Leuchie?
What I have enjoyed most about working with guests at Leuchie is the genuine time we have to engage with them, without the constant pressure of the clock. Being able to listen properly, share conversations, and understand their life stories has been incredibly meaningful. The sense of community and mutual respect between staff and guests has made this placement feel purposeful.
4. What skills or experiences did you gain here that you can’t get on a typical placement?
Leuchie has offered experiences beyond those of a typical placement. One valuable aspect was the opportunity to accompany carers during a morning shift and see firsthand the level of dedication, skill, and compassion their role demands. It gave me a much deeper appreciation for the multidisciplinary nature of care and the importance of teamwork in supporting guests’ overall well-being. I have also enjoyed how Louise, our supervisor, encouraged us to focus on vital soft skills such as empathy, active listening, patience, and emotional awareness, which are essential when working with people facing life-changing conditions. These human interactions are as important as any technical skill, and I have the utmost respect for everyone who contributes to this remarkable environment.
