Purpose
To allow guests who can sufficiently weight bear to transfer from one seated position to another, without putting staff or themselves at risk. This is done either with both seats positioned at a 90-degree angle to each other for the SAM TURNER or one seat exchanged with another whilst the guest is standing. The RETURN can be used when a VERY small area of movement is required. (NOT DISTANCES)
The term seat is used in this policy inclusively of commode, shower chair, bed side, wheelchair, arm chair, sit-on scales etc.
Procedure
- Staff are trained to use the equipment during their induction period.
- Guests are initially assessed by the manual handling trainers & assessors and will be ongoingly reassessed to ensure that they are able to comply with the use of the equipment.
- Two staff are required for the use and transfer with this equipment.
- Guests must be able to maintain a sufficiently upright position to allow time to transfer. The Return has a support belt which can aid this. (THIS IS FOR SUPPORT ONLY, STAFF MUST NOT PULL A GUEST TO ASSIST STANDING UP WITH THE BELT)
- Theses standing aids are height adjustable to suit guest requirements.
- Instruct the guest on the safe use of this piece of equipment.
- Encourage the guest to move forward on their seat prior to standing up.
- Transferring at a 90-degree angle.
The seat you are transferring to should be at a right angle to the one you are transferring from with the SAM TURNER, a little more with the Return (NO DISTANCES)
Position the standing equipment centrally, closely and at equal distance to both
Seats.
Ensure the guest’s legs rest against the shin brace and the feet are positioned in the middle of the plate.
Place yourself opposite from the guest, holding on to the handle. Place one foot on the brake to prevent the stand turner from tipping over or turning prematurely.
Encourage the guest to hold onto the handles of the standing equipment and to raise to a standing position by moving ‘their nose over their toes’. The guest should be able to do this unaided or with minimal assistance from a second member of staff to avoid injury to themselves or staff.
Remove foot from brake.
Assist the guest by turning the stand turner towards the desired direction. As a second member of staff, stand to the side of the guest to assist against lateral movement by supporting the guest by their hips. The Return can be pulled out away from first seat and round to second seat.
- Transferring the guest by swapping seats over. This option should only be chosen if the guest has been assessed to stand reliably for long enough to swap the seats over.
Position the seat the guest is transferring to close by and ready for use.
Position the standing equipment centrally in front of the guest.
When the guest is safely in an upright position, the second staff swaps the guest’s seat with the one the guest is transferring to.
Keep holding on to the standing equipment’s handles and keep your foot on the brake while the guest is sitting down on the seat behind them. The second staff may assist the guest by the hips to guide them safely into the seat.
- If a guest has been assessed as suitable to use the standing equipment it will be documented on the triage sheet and in the guest’s care plan manual handling risk assessment.
