Use of Slide Sheet Procedure

Purpose:

To minimise the risk of injury to guests and staff and to reduce unnecessary handling of guests who have been identified by manual handling risk assessment to benefit from the use of slide sheets.

Procedure:

  • Slide sheets are used for a variety of manual handling tasks in and around the guest’s bed and/or wheelchair, as identified by risk assessment and documented in the care plan.

  • Each slide sheet is used in accordance with the Manual Handling training given to all staff.

  • Employees who have not received relevant instruction and training must not use slide sheets for guest handling.

  • Safe storage is essential – slide sheets are made of slippery material and can be hazardous. They should not be left on the floor or under an unattended guest but should be folded up neatly and stored where they can be easily retrieved.

  • Two staff are required to use a slide sheet safely.

  • Ensure the environment is safe. Remove any obstructions that could hinder the manoeuvre, such as chairs or guests’ belongings.

  • Check the slide sheet, ensure it is clean and the correct size.

  • Ensure the slide sheet is placed into position with its closed ends facing the direction of the manoeuvre.
  • Slide sheets are to be laundered in compliance with Leuchie’s Infection Control policy unless they are disposable ones.
