Purpose:
To ensure burns are treated quickly and correctly in an attempt to minimise pain and skin damage.
Procedure:
- First aid can be provided by a trained first aider. If the victim is a guest, then the RN will co-ordinate the care.
- Bathe the injured area with cold water for at least 10 minutes in an attempt to prevent further damage and minimise pain.
- Remove constricting items for example watches and restrictive clothing before the injured area starts to swell.
- Cover the injured area with a clean dressing or any clean non fluffy material. A plastic bag or clear kitchen film makes a good temporary cover and reduced the risk of the area becoming infected.
- Treat the injured person for shock if necessary. Keep them warm and still and if possible raise their legs.
- If necessary call for medical assistance
- Fill in an accident form and in the case of a guest document in care plan.
