Use of the Sara Stedy
PURPOSE: To enable guests with some capacity to support themselves to transfer from one seated position to another, without putting the care/nursing staff or themselves at risk.
PREPARATION
- Staff are trained to use the equipment during their induction period.
- It is important that the guest is initially assessed by the manual handling trainers & assessors to ensure that the individual is able to use the sara stedy safely.
- If a guest is assessed as suitable to use the sara stedy then this will be documented in the mobility and motor control section of their care plan. This information will also be passed on to staff at handover.
- The Sara Stedy has a maximum user weight of 182 kg
- The Sara Stedy is designed for use with one carer. However, it is the carer’s responsibility to consider if factors exist that mean it should become a two-person transfer, or if the guest themselves has requested two people.
PROCEDURE
- Inform the guest of what you are about to do.
- If you are transferring to or from a wheelchair, ensure the wheelchair brakes are on.
- Pivot the two seat halves up.
- Open the legs if needed and push the Sara Stedy towards the guest
- Position the Sara Stedy so that the guest’s feet are placed on the footrest with their knees comfortably against the knee pad.

- Encourage the guest to hold the crossbar and to use it to pull themselves into standing, keeping their knees against the knee pad.
- Pivot the two seat halves down.
- Ask the guest to sit back on the seat.
- Release the brake and move the Sara Stedy to the desired position.
- Ask the guest to stand up.
