SARA Mechanical Stand Aid

The Use of the SARA Mechanical Stand Aid (3000, Encore & Lite)

Purpose:

To enable guests with some capacity to support themselves to transfer from one seated position to another, without putting the care/nursing staff or themselves at risk of injury.

Procedure:

  • Staff are trained to use the equipment during their induction period.

  • It is important that the guest is initially assessed by the manual handling trainers & assessors to ensure that the individual is able to use the stand aid safely

  • A guest’s suitability to use the stand aid will be documented on the triage sheet and in the manual handling risk assessment on their guest profile on PCS. This information will also be passed on to staff at Nursing Report.

  • Encourage the guest to lean forward slightly to enable the sling to be placed around their lower back with arms on the outside of the sling.

  • Ensure that the support strap is separated and brought loosely around the body, and is not twisted or trapped behind the guest’s back.

  • To fasten the support strap securely, press the buckles together. The strap should be comfortable for the guest.

  • The support strap must always be applied when using the sling.

  • If machine has leg straps in place these should be used.

  • Bring the Stand aid close to the guest and ask the guest to place their feet on the foot support. Assist with this if required.

  • Apply the clips to the attachment points and secure them for safety.

  • The guest should hold on to the support handles with at least one hand, but ideally with both hands.

  • The guest is now ready to be lifted. Encourage the guest to give as much assistance as possible to rise from the chair and/or steady themselves.  Atleast 75% of effort.

  • Use the lift button on the control handset to raise the guest to a suitable and comfortable height for the particular function.

  • The guest’s feet should always remain in full contact with the foot support.

  • Ensure that the patient’s feet do not lift from the support. If this happens, lower the guest immediately and reassess.

  • Guests who can only hold on with one hand may still be transferred with the Stand aid, but their arm should be by their side over the sling or held in place on the handle by a staff member.

  • Transfer the guest to the required position, such as the toilet, wheelchair, chair, bed, etc.

  • To remove the sling when the guest is seated in the new position, remove the clips and  open the buckle to remove the support strap, ask guest to lean forward and remove the sling.
