Resuscitation/ Not for Resuscitation Procedure

Purpose:

To inform all guests and staff about the resuscitation policy for guests staying at Leuchie House. It will clarify the procedure to follow when a guest makes an advance directive to refuse emergency medical intervention or arrives which a do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation order.

Procedure:

  • As part of the admission process, the admitting RN will record that a guest has an advance directive or a do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (DNACPR) order, this information will be recorded within the guest’s notes.  If the guest has a DNACPR order or an advanced directive they must bring original with them.
  • Advanced directives and DNACPR forms must be dated and signed by a relevant lawyer or GP and are to be reviewed annually.
  • Any individual instructions will be recorded accurately within the guest’s notes. Any written entries to the guest’s notes will be made in agreement with the guest and signed and dated where possible by all parties.
  • All staff will be made aware of a guests DNACPR form through daily reports and on arrival day and the information is also documented on triage.
  • If a guest has one of the above the original has to be kept in the medication kardex and taken when out on trips.

  • Guests can be assured that if they refuse emergency intervention staff will continue to offer a high standard of care to ensure, comfort, dignity and privacy throughout any clinical emergency.

  • In a clinical emergency a visit from a general practitioner will be requested. All requests and written instructions from the guest will be conveyed to the GP and other professionals subsequently responsible for continuing care.

  • A senior nurse will ensure that all relevant information, requests and written instructions are copied and sent with the guest on discharge or transfer to another healthcare unit.
