Leuchie Leaders Club

Yesterday at the Leuchie Leaders Club, on a very dreich Scottish evening, we had the privilege of hearing from Calum Arthur at the W Hotel, Edinburgh — and it was one of those conversations that stays with you. Calum is the Director of Cutting Edge Psychology, where he applies the science of performance psychology to enhance decision-making in high-stakes environments. His work with individuals and teams takes him around the world – from complex surgery to military, Olympic, and professional sport, including the Premier League and Major League Baseball.

Calum reminded us that leadership isn’t who you are, it’s what you do. A verb. A skill. Something you practise — imperfectly, incrementally, consistently.

Not striving for a mythical 10/10, but asking better questions instead:

• Where would others score your leadership?
• When did you last do something new — and how often do you expect that of the people you lead?
• Are you focusing your energy on what’s actually controllable?
• Are you showing up consistently and doing the basics really well?

He talked about credibility being granted by those you lead, about mental toughness as something situational, not permanent, and about our deep, human need to belong — and what happens when that feels threatened.

Calum delivered a thoughtful, grounded discussion led by a very human being, drawing on his life, research, and leadership practice across elite military, sporting and medical environments. We were grateful for his time as he had to travel down to London that evening for his next sporting assignment!
