The Leuchie Leaders Club recently had the privilege of hosting Caroline Lamb, Chief Executive of NHS Scotland and Director General Health and Social Care in conversation with Frank O’Donnell of Charlotte Street Partners.

Over 180,000 people. A £22.5 billion budget. Quite possibly the most complex leadership challenge in Scotland. Yet what struck those in the room most wasn’t the scale — it was the humanity.

Caroline spoke with remarkable candour about the qualities that matter most in leadership at any level:

• Resilience — leading through the extraordinary, including a workforce that gave everything and more during Covid.
• Collaboration — building the right team and getting the best from people, even in the toughest environments.
• Kindness — recognising that behind every colleague is a person carrying things you may know nothing about.

At a time when pressure to reform and deliver has never been greater, Caroline’s message was clear: human qualities in leadership are not soft extras. They are the foundation.
